Celebrating the NZ 48Hours Film Competition 2017

The HP48 competition is an amazing, stressful, horrifying, joyful competition. As a part of teams Two Big Tools and now Tomorrow Today, I’ve had the pleasure in competing since 2011.

For the first time, though, there’s a documentary about it! Watch the video below to see how a team of idiots can go from being happy to stressed to happy again in less than 48 hours!

This year, I was the writer and director.

Writing, shooting, filming in just two days

The 48Hours Film Comp is a fiery cauldron of sweat and stress and laughs. We get just two days to write, film and edit a 5-min picture, which has to include certain elements – a genre, a theme, a character, a physical element, a technical element and a sound effect (aaargh so many things).

In 2017, we had to make a sequel to one of our previous films, the 2015 classic “A Dame a Dozen” – which won an audience favourite award, and a bunch of highly polarised reviews! We took this film on because we loved the characters, and the world we had created (and subsequently destroyed) in the prequel was bonkers. It was a detective mystery mixed with a fever dream, and it was beautiful.

“ADAD 2: The Wizarding” is our sequel, which you can watch below. It features shit eating, space dogfights and an animated half-mouse/half-cat. Basically, it rocks!
